Alfie Evans lives in the U.K., where healthcare is free and provided by the government. U.K. law allows doctors to override parents’ wishes as regards medical care if it’s in the child’s “best interests.”
Doctors determined that Alfie’s condition was fatal and unlikely to respond to treatment, his parents lost all control. The Vatican, Poland, and Italy have all offered to give Alfie the care he needs.
Alfie was taken off life support three days ago and didn’t die. The hospital staff decided to starve him if being off life support wouldn’t kill him. Three days into not being on life support and not eating the baby hasn’t shown any signs of a problem.
