Gary Shipman and his Democratic opponents, running for a seat as a representative in House Senate – Leslie Cohen and John Bauer – were asked at a campaign event how they would promote inclusion. The event was organized by African-American voters and wanted to know why they should be interested in the democrats campaigns, the News & Observer reported.
When one candidate offered to go to African American events in the community, Shipman, a civil liberties attorney, responded in a Rachel Dolezal manner. He said he didn’t need an invitation because black people already view him as one of them.
“I’m a member of the African-American community,” said Shipman, who is white. “I’ve been where you are. I’ve been in your communities.” While his intentions were possibly well intended, they are considered offensive by much of the black community and it’s allies.
